OH v. Caleb Flynn

Caleb Flynn is on trial in Miami County, Ohio, charged with the aggravated murder of his wife, Ashley Flynn, a Tipp City Schools volleyball coach and substitute teacher. He has pleaded not guilty. He is presumed innocent. The burden rests entirely with the State of Ohio, and it never shifts.

Flynn called 911 himself and said an intruder broke into their home and shot his wife. Prosecutors say the physical evidence tells a different story: the garage he named as the point of entry was barricaded from the inside, his own truck's center console sat open in that same garage, and shell casings on the bedroom floor matched a handgun he kept feet away. A text sent from his phone less than two hours before the shooting, to a woman who was not his wife, read: "It's almost done."

Flynn's defense has not offered its own account of what happened inside that house. Instead, it has challenged how fast the investigation moved and how high the court set his bond, and it fought unsuccessfully to move the trial out of Miami County over the volume of local coverage the case has drawn, some of it fueled by Flynn's own brief run on American Idol more than a decade before any of this. That fight over an impartial jury pool is now something jury selection itself has to answer.
